Abstract:

The subject of this research is to spatially analyse the publicity of The Early Republican Period building type People's Houses over the projects obtained by competitions. When the literature is examined; It is observed that the concepts of the public space and the public sphere were mostly discussed in the urban context and also it's observed that The People's Houses Typology was not directly examined in the context of publicity in previous studies. Developing spatial analysis of The People's Houses examples obtained by competitions is the main method of this study. The original drawings especially the floor plans, photographs, and the Architect's own explanation notes had been utilized during the study. With this method, it is aimed to examine the spatial qualifications that make The People's Houses public spaces. In the first two chapters of the study; the subject, purpose and method of the research are explained. The third chapter consists of defining the public space and the public sphere concepts and examining the differences between them. In the fourth chapter, the development of the concept of public space in the Early Republican Period was examined and The People's Houses were conceptually discussed. The fifth chapter consists of the plan readings and analyzes of the People's Houses examples obtained by competitions. In the sixth chapter, these readings were examined and a general program and publicity interpretation about these examples were made. As a result, the definition of The People's Houses as public spaces are explained over the qualifications of the spaces in these buildings, the openness of these spaces to the public use and the configuration of this openness in the plan. It is believed that this study will contribute to the literature in terms of the examination of the spatial structure of The People's Houses typology and conducting a publicity discussion in this context.
