Proje Özeti

Hippotherapy is a treatment with the help of a horse. Today, equine-assisted therapy is incorporated into physical, occupational and speech language therapy plans world-wide. Equine-assisted activities (EAA) involve horse related skills (such as riding) and are used to improve quality of life. Ample evidence supports that hippotherapy is successful. The horse's rhythmical movement, resembling the human gait has both physical and psychosocial benefits. The direct physical benefits include improved muscle symmetry, postural alignment, improved balance and gait, decreased spasticity and improved respiratory and motor control of speech. Psychosocial benefits may include improvement in self-concept, locus of control, affect, and behavior. However introduction and development of connection between the targeted group, in this case patients and special needs people, and the horses can be challenging due to the emotional barriers of the both parts of hippotherapy. The emotional barriers mentioned causes anxiety and stress for the animals and target group which reduces the efficiency of the hippotherapy and increases the therapy timespan.
