Effect of permeability on liquefaction potential of silty sands

© 2021, Saudi Society for Geosciences.Due to the increasing pore water pressure in the saturated sandy soils under dynamic loads, soils turn from solid to a liquid state, and loss of bearing capacity is observed. Liquefaction causes different types of deformations in soils. As a result, deformations such as different settlement, tilting, and turning occur and cause great damage to the structure. Destruction occurring under dynamic loads should be minimized as a result of determining the areas where liquefaction is expected by taking necessary measures. Adapazari that experienced liquefaction during the earthquakes in 1999 is one of Turkey’s active seismic regions consisting of sand soils that are susceptible to liquefy. For this reason, researchers have run dynamic experiments and conducted studies with samples obtained from the region. In this study, using a dynamic triaxial test system, silty sand samples taken from region were prepared at different void ratios and then dynamically loaded. Moreover, permeability tests of the samples were carried out under the same conditions. The results showed that concrete relations between the cyclic stress ratio and void ratio were constituted at different number of cycles and permeability is directly linked to the cyclic resistance.
