The aim of the study is to determine the usability of waste magnesia powders in the production of paper based cellulose material as a fire retardant additive. In experiments, the waste sample, supplied from the electrostatic bag house of magnesia production plant, was used in the paper based cellules formulations as received or calcined forms. In ignition tests, the Bunsen burner was used as a flame source and the times for the samples to be ignited were recorded for each formulation. According to the test results, it was found that the addition of magnesia powder has a beneficial effect on the ignition time of products. Therefore, it can be suggested that the magnesia waste could be use as a low cost and environmental friendly material as a fire retardant additive within the formulation of cellulosic materials.
