Özet:

This descriptive study was conducted on parents of mentally retarded children (n:66) who were students at special classes for such children of 14 schools in Eski§ehir. The purpose of the study was to explore the problems of parents about their children current situation and their future; to determine the levels of their perceived social support and hopelessness and to examine the variables which may effect their social support and hopelessness. Data were collected by a socio - demographic form and "Beck Hopelessness Scale" and "Multidimensional Scale Of The Perceived Social Support". Mann Whitney U, KruskaJl Wallis, correlation and t test was used to analyse "SSPS for windows" Findings of the study showed that the levels of hopelessness were not too high (X: 7 .27) and the parents' perception of their social support were at satisfactory level (X:63.45). Family was identified as the most important resource of social support (X:22.67) While the other resources of social support (friend X:20.45 and special man - women X:20.50) were perceived at low levels by the parents. Correlation's between "perceived social" and "hopelessness" were negative, but weak (r:-33). There were no statistical differences between groups of sample when the variables which can effect the levels of social support were taken in to account (p>O.05) On the other hand, the levels of the hopelessness were affected by some variables significantly such as gender of child, dependency level for feeding activity, current chronically problems of parents, mental retardation of the other children in the family, other persons awareness of the retardation of the child (p
