Özet

Objective: Suicide is an important problem which has social, cultural and socio-economic aspects. The coping attitudes used for to minimize or eliminate the negative effects of stressor events are universal. When the coping mechanisms among stressful events are ineffective and not problem solving oriented, also unsufficient support of family to child and youth, suicide attitude may pass through from thought to action easily. In this study we asessed coping strategies of children and youths who have suicide attempts. Methods: This study was carried out by 30 child and youths who had suicide attempts and 33 child and youths who had no attempts. The data was collected for the socio-demographic properties of the youth by a form. The scale of Coping Strategies (COPE) and Hamilton Depression Inventory (HAM-D) were performed. The socio-demographic properties of the both groups are identical. Results: In suicide attempt group, coping strategies like positive re-interpretation and evolution, mental disregard, positive social support usage, active overcoming, joking, dealing attitudes are found significantly using less than control group (p<0.05) Positive re-interpretation, active overcoming, joking are overcoming attitudes for the problems. Conclusions: The less usage of those shows that child and adolescent can not deal with the stressful events in their environment. Not using social support network and trying to deal with stress by themself and unsolvably let child and adolescent be drift towards suicide attempts. In depression, anxiety and stress emotional oriented coping strategies are using more then problem solving oriented coping strategies. It is necessary to apply optimistic attitudes education models for increasing problem solving coping mechanisms before adolescence. This study investigated the coping strategies of the child and youth who have attempted suicide and controls in Eastern Anatolia.
