Abstract

This article presents mutual coupling reduction between two closely spaced $E$-coupled patch antennas using a complementary U-shaped polarization converter. The edge-to-edge distance of the antennas is $0.1\lambda _{0}$, and the proposed approach achieves an average of 8 dB for the $-10$ dB bandwidth and a maximum of 13 dB mutual coupling reduction in measurement. To reduce the increased cross-polarization results in the $E$- plane, L-shaped stubs are added to the upper and lower edges of the antennas. Thanks to the stubs, the cross-polarization levels are improved from $-12$ dB to a $-29$ dB for the $E$- plane. Due to its simple design, preserved radiation characteristics, and avoidance of ground plane etching, the antenna is a good candidate for next-generation antenna array applications requiring low mutual coupling and cross-polarization.
