Özet
Ménière's disease, also known as idiopathic endolymphatic hydrops, is a condition affecting the inner ear. Endolymphatic hydrops refers to an increase in hydraulic pressure within the inner ear's endolymphatic system, leading to several characteristic symptoms. These include: (1) fluctuating hearing loss, (2) occasional vertigo episodes (often severe and spinning), (3) tinnitus (typically a low-pitched roaring sound), and (4) a sensation of fullness in the ears (such as pressure or discomfort). While the terms "endolymphatic hydrops," "Ménière's disease," and "Ménière syndrome" are sometimes used interchangeably, they are slightly different. Ménière's disease is idiopathic by definition, meaning its cause is unknown. At the same time, Ménière syndrome results from other underlying conditions that disrupt the normal production or absorption of endolymph (such as hormonal imbalances, trauma, autoimmune issues, or infections). The evolving understanding of the pathophysiology of Ménière's disease suggests that a reevaluation and potential redefinition of the condition may be forthcoming.
