Özet

Emine Semiye Hanim is the daughter of Ahmet Cevdet Pasa, one of the leading statesmen of the Tanzimat Period, and the sister of Fatma Aliye Hanim, who is regarded as the first Turkish woman novelist. Emine Semiye is one of the leaders of the Ottoman women's movement and is known for the various roles she successfully took on as a politician, journalist, teacher and nurse. In a variety of newspaper articles and literary works Emine Semiye dwelt on political and social issues like women's rights, feminism, and children's education. This study aims to draw attention to the significant role Emine Semiye Hanim played both in the Turkish women's movement and in Turkish literature by focusing on her social and political activities and her identity as a woman of letters, as an educator and as a supporter of women's rights.
