Özet
Children with facial deformities face unique challenges when communicating with and in the world. In doing so, these children experience stigma associated with their faces that frames their abnormality in terms of shame, incompleteness, or absence. The face remains a public exposure site even for patients in all but the most acute phases of care. This is especially true for facial deformities that occur during an omitted period of development or healing, leaving those caring for the patient unable to account for their visual difference in the language of injury or illness. The necessity for one’s visual deviation from the normal can be seen to exceed the limit of comprehension even for the most world-wise observer. The face initially serves to reassure others in social interactions, allowing it to express, relay, or conceal thoughts and emotions with relative ease.
