Xeroderma Pigmentosum is a rare disease characterized by dermal keratosis, hyperpigmentation and a group of dermal malignancy. For the treatment of malign or premalign dermal lesions either surgical or chemical dermabrasion are available methods. Phenol, despite its widespread use in plastic and reconstructive surgery in higher concentrations for chemical dermabrasion; toxic reactions with its minimal concentrations has been reported. In our case; our patient has undergone tarsoraphy and chemical dermabrasion had been applied over % 10 of total body surface with phenol for an hour because of xeroderma pigmentosum. A sudden onset ventricular tachycardia ending for aproximately 5 hours later had started. Serum LDH and AST levels were above limits for 3 days, serum CK-MB levels were above limits for 6 days. By the end of 6 days; our patient has been discharged with normal physical and neurological examination signs and with normal laboratuar findings. It has been reported in the literature that, the determinants of phenol intoxication include the concentration of phenol solution, application time interval, application area and the degree of perfusion in the area of phenol application. We concluded that, the toxicity developed in our case might be due to phenol administration in a wide suface area for short time period.
