Transcranial Doppler is a diagnostic method that is used for many years to diagnose and follow up the central nervous system diseases via examining the blood flow velocity parameters in the basal cerebral arteries. Although the augmentation of the effect of given fibrinolytic treatment in acute ischemic stroke by the low frequency ultrasound waves was known before; this effect can be also provided by the high frequency ultrasound energy given by TCD. Positive effects of TCD on the effectiveness of systemically given fibrinolytic treatment has shown that it can be also used for the treatment. In this review, we assessed position of the TCD in tretment of acute ischemic stroke.
