The sound wave propagation in ducts with sudden area expansion is a well-known problem in noise control engineering and has been analyzed by researchers since several decades. The usual approach to this problem involves either simulations or fundamental mathematical methods such as mode-matching technique or Wiener-Hopf technique. In this study, we approach the problem with a kind of multimodal analysis for bifurcated waveguides and use the scattering coefficients in building block method to reach solutions for the sudden area expansion problem. Same scattering coefficients can also be used for sudden area contraction problem by the use of the building block method. This mathematical approach is also illustrated graphically with respect to certain geometrical parameters, such as the radii of the ducts with smaller and larger cross sectional areas, as well as the frequency of the incident acoustic pressure.
