Özet

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and the factors associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) among the female population in the reproductive age group in the rural region of Eskisehir, a providence in Turkey. Study design: A randomly selected group of 1282 women, aged 15 to 49 years, was interviewed by means of investigator-administered questionnaire which included the questions about sociodemographic and reproductive characteristics and premenstrual symptoms. Results: Premenstrual tension was found in 65.3% of the study group. The prevalence of PMS varied by age groups, being the lowest in women between 40 and 49 years of age. The factors associated with high prevalence of PMS were high-school graduation, primiparity, having a single child, dysmenorrhoea or irregular menses. Oral contraception use seemed to lower the prevalence of PMS. Conclusion: It was concluded that the international standards should be developed for defining the syndrome and determining the correlated factors and that the women with PMS should be given health education.
