Özet

Background: There is limited data evaluating functional status and quality of sexual life in multiple sclerosis (MS), and there is no data showing the relationship between the two variables. This study aims to investigate the relationship between MS, functional status, and sexual quality of life in female patients with multiple sclerosis. Methods: This descriptive correlational study was conducted between September 2023 and February 2024 with 236 female patients with MS using the online Google survey tool and snowballing method. Data were collected using the Information Form, Functional Ambulation Classification (FAC), Krutzke Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), Multiple Sclerosis Impact Scale (TR-MSIS-29) and Multiple Sclerosis Intimacy and Sexuality Questionnaire-15 (MSISQ-15). In this article, the functional status and sexual quality of life of women with MS will be determined. Results: Regarding assessment scores, TR-MSIS-29 total mean score was 89.78 ± 34.62, while MSISQ-15 total mean score was 55.68 ± 13.86. Additionally, FAC mean score was 3.49 ± 1.91, and EDSS mean score was 2.80 ± 2.30. Significant positive correlations were observed between TR-MSIS-29 total score, MSISQ-15 total and sub-dimensions scores, and EDSS total score. There was a strong, statistically significant negative relationship between these scales and FAC, and after the Bonferroni correction, all correlations remained statistically significant (p_adj < 0.0024). Conclusion: As the functional ambulation level of women with MS increases, the MS impact level is positively affected, intimacy and sexuality status increases positively, and disability status decreases. Gynecology nurses will guide female patients with MS in their disease management by evaluating their sexual life as well as their physical process and providing education and counseling regarding sexual life.
