Objective: Determination of the effect of the book named 'Coloring Book For Children With Leukemia and Their Families' prepared by the researchers on parent anxiety. Material and Methods: The interventional (pre-test, post-test) and cross-sectional study was completed with a total of 37 volunteer relatives of the patients who were treated in Pediatric Haematology Clinic of a University Hospital and in a Pediatric Research and Training Hospital between December 1, 2008 and March 31, 2009. Data of the study were collected with "Identifying Characteristics of the Individuals Form", "Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory" and "Coloring Book for Children With Leukemia and Their Families". SPSS 15.0 package program was used for coding and assessment of the data. Results: Of the children with leukemia, 62.3% were males, 29.8% were in 3-6, 59.4% 7-11, 10.8% 12-15 age group and 45.9% were diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, 37.9% with acute lymphoblastic and 16.2% with chronic myeloid leukemia. Of the parents enrolled in the study, 54% were aged between 25-35 years and 46% between 36-50 years. Of mothers, 94.6% were housewives, 45.9% were graduates of elemantary school. It was found that 91.9% of the parents had some information about the disease, treatment and care, 58.8% stated that they found this knowledge sufficient, 51.4% declared that social support systems were sufficient, 59.9% had troubles and 78.4% told that they could not cope with stress. It was detected that 37.95% of the children were pleased with the color the book and 94.5% of the families were satisfied by the book as an educational material. While a significant difference was found in state trait anxiety level, a decrease was found in constant anxiety though statistically insignificant. Conclusion: The education material showed an effect to decrease anxiety and it is advised that similar books should be prepared for other diseases in order to decrease anxiety of parents.
