Abstract
Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a disease characterized by chronic and widespread
musculoskeletal pain, the pathogenesis of which has not been fully elucidated. It is thought that
immunological changes that cause inflammatory state may play a role in its pathogenesis.
Our study was performed in order to compare C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate
(ESR), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte/ lymphocyte
ratio (MLR), mean corpuscular hemoglobin/ platelet distribution width ratio (MCH/PDW ratio), the
platelet distribution width (PDW), the mean platelet volüme (MPV), the red blood cell distrubution
(RDW) and the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII ) which are the systemic inflammatory
response (SIR) markers in patients with fibromyalgia and acute localised musculskeletal pain.
This study was conducted with 31 female patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia and 31 female
patients with acute localized musculoskeletal pain in our Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation outpatient
clinic between January 2022- June 2023. Demographic characteristic (age), CRP, ESR, NLR, PLR,
MLR, MCH/PDW ratio, MPV, RDW and SII were recorded.
The mean platelet volume in the fibromyalgia group was higher than in the localised pain
group(p=0.015) ; No differences were found between the two groups in the other systemic inflammatory
response markers. There was no statistical difference between the 2 groups in terms of the SII values
(p=0.894).
The results of this study suggest that MPV may be a promising marker as an inflammatory
marker in patients with fibromyalgia and may be useful in facilitating the diagnosis of FMS patients.
