ENGINEERING FAILURE ANALYSIS, cilt.56, ss.275-287, 2015 (SCI-Expanded)
Reinforced concrete and steel structures are designed with consideration of dead, service and seismic loads. Structures may experience failure because of these loads. Studies indicate that, structures are considerably failure because of corrosion, which is an important case, not considered during design stage of structures. Effects of corrosion on structures can be eliminated by various methods like all structural and material irregularities. Corrosion, which threatens reinforcement steel during the service life of the building, is a chemical and electro-chemical reaction which cause metals to lose their metallic properties. Most of the metals are not durable to water and atmospheric effects and they experience corrosion even in normal conditions. Oxygen, humidity and electrolyte are required for corrosion. Even one of them is not existent, no corrosion will occur. In this study, causes of corrosion of reinforcement bars and corrosion phases are examined. In addition, the effects of corrosion failure in structures and precautions to be taken to avoid existing and planned structures from earthquake failure are examined. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
