Spatial and Conceptual Intuition in Human-AI Interaction: A Qualitative Comparative Study in the Architectural Design Studio

Özet
The integration of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) into architectural design studios raises critical questions about how intuitive thinking, decision-making, and authorship are reconfigured. Grounded in the premise that intuition emerges through iterative engagement with representation, critique, and dialogue, this study examines how different interaction configurations reshape the temporal structure of design thinking. Using a qualitative, within-subject comparative case study approach, the research is structured in two phases. In the first phase, the same spatial design problem was addressed under three configurations: human-only production, human-AI co-production, and AI-mediated production-allowing comparison of how design begins, how decisions develop, and how control and ownership are experienced. In the second phase, AI-supported writing was compared with face-to-face dialogue to analyze how conceptual reasoning is constructed through language and questioning. The findings show that generative AI reorganizes decision-making rather than simply increasing efficiency. In human-centered configurations, intuition operates as a temporally unfolding process, supporting continuous development and strong authorship. In AI-mediated production, decision-making shifts toward selection among pre-generated alternatives, reducing decision traceability and producing more ambivalent ownership. At the conceptual level, AI-supported writing stabilizes reasoning, while dialogue sustains its exploratory and transformative character. By linking spatial and conceptual processes through temporal structure, the study reframes intuition as a relational process, positions AI as a reconfigurator of design processes, and shifts the focus from output production to the construction and maturation of decisions. These insights contribute to discussions on hybrid studio models that integrate AI while preserving reflective thinking and conceptual depth.
