In the present study, the effect of grinding charge on grinding kinetics was investigated. Balls and cylpebs were used as grinding charges for comparison. Quartz was chosen as a reference sample because it follows first order grinding kinetics. It was found that the grinding of quartz obeyed the first order breakage kinetics in the case of balls and cylpebs. Cylpebs produced faster breakage rates than ball charges under the same mass and surface area conditions. In addition, the differences between the breakage rates were more significant for coarse size fractions than for fine size fractions.
