Özet

Objective: Stroke is among the leading causes of neurological deficit and death in most countries. Most stroke cases are ischemic in origin and cardioembolism plays an important role in stroke etiology. Embolic distribution in areas specifically serviced by major cerebral arteries has been observed in various studies. We studied the territorial distribution of cardioembolic infarcts in stroke patients and compared the results with the literature. Material and Methods: Territorial distribution of embolic infarcts in stroke patients with cardioembolic risk factors was retrospectively examined. Thirty-six patients (14 female, 22 male) who had suffered a stroke between November, 2000 and September, 2003 were included in the study. Patient ages ranged between 18 to 79 (mean 57.69 ± 15.25). All patients underwent cranial computed tomography examination. Patients were evaluated with regard to sex, age, co-morbidities, cardioembolic risk factors, computed tomography scans and neurological deficits. Results: The results of our study for stroke territory distribution were as follows: middle cerebral artery 70.37%, posterior cerebral artery 24.0%, and anterior cerebral artery 1.89%. Cerebellar infarcts represented 3.78% of all infarcts. Conclusion: Cardioembolic infarcts were mostly observed in the territorial domain of the middle cerebral artery, with a smaller percentage in that of the posterior cerebral artery. Distribution to areas served by the anterior cerebral artery was shown to occur much less. Copyright © 2005 by Türkiye Klinikleri.
