Migration is a concept directly connected with the history of humanity. In prehistoric times when
mankind was a hunter-gatherer, migration was mostly based on nutrition, one of the basic needs. With
the emergence of agricultural societies and transition to settled order, it has transformed and turned
into a phenomenon based on economic, social and political reasons.
EskiĢehir city is located on the southern border of EskiĢehir plain and in the middle of Sarısu Porsuk
Valley, northwest of Central Anatolia. Especially after 1877, immigration movements to the city
started. It is known that the groups that immigrated to EskiĢehir consist mostly of immigrants from
Rumea and the Caucasus, and other Turks in Rumelia.
Drawing a small town appearance until the 19th century, EskiĢehir has entered a change and
transformation with the effect of immigration. The main advantages of a settlement such as the
proximity of the city to the transportation networks, having flat and arable lands have also had a
positive effect on the migration movement.
In this study, it is aimed to map the migration movement to EskiĢehir with historical information and
to create a story map showing EskiĢehir & immigration connection. The handling of historical events
and related places together has an important place in historical narration. Therefore, maps are
considered as a remarkable material in this regard. The purpose of mapping the migration movements
of the study is based on practicing the transfer of historical knowledge and increasing its
dissemination.
In this direction, as a first step, research has been conducted on the groups that migrated to EskiĢehir
and the regions receiving migration. In the next process, the cloud-based ESRI Story Map application
serving on ArcGIS Online was used. Through this application, a story map was created about the
groups that migrated to EskiĢehir and the regions receiving migration. ESRI Story Map is an
application that allows users to create interactive maps and to tell various stories using maps. The
application's web-based effect positively affects the widespread impact of historical knowledge. As a
result, in this study, the migration movement is handled based on location based on EskiĢehir city
sampling. With the study, it is aimed to contribute to the expression of the migration phenomenon. In
addition, it is planned to affect the transfer and dissemination of historical information with the story
map, which is one of the new narrative techniques. In addition, this study is a reference for future
studies related to the date and place.
