Youth mental health challenges are a growing global concern, with many young people unable or unwilling to access traditional support. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based mental health support systems, such as chatbots and digital platforms, have emerged as innovative tools to bridge gaps in youth mental health care. This chapter provides an overview of AI-driven mental health support systems designed for children and adolescents, examining their potential benefits and inherent challenges. On the benefits side, AI tools promise to expand access to support through 24/7 availability, anonymity that may reduce stigma, personal-ized interventions, and scalability for underserved populations. A 2023 meta-analysis of 32 randomized controlled trials demonstrated that conversational agents consistently produce small-to-moderate short-term reductions in depres-sive and anxiety symptoms across diverse settings (He et al., J Med Internet Res 25:e43862, 2023). These systems have shown effectiveness in delivering thera-peutic techniques and early intervention in some cases. However, significant challenges and concerns temper this optimism. Issues of effectiveness, ethical use, privacy, and safety are paramount. AI lacks the empathetic understanding of human therapists and may struggle with complex emotional needs. There are risks related to data privacy, bias in algorithms, regulatory gaps, and the potential for overreliance on technology. This chapter explores these benefits and challenges in depth, using current research and examples of AI-based mental health interven-tions for youth. It concludes with recommendations for integrating AI tools responsibly in youth mental health support, emphasizing that AI is a supplement to—not a replacement for—human care, and highlighting the need for safe-guards, ethical guidelines, and continued human oversight.
