Smart and Sustainable Gig Economy in the Industrial 5.0 Era: Engineering and Management Aspects, CRC, Ghent, Belgium , ss.19-34, 2026
Although Industry 4.0 and related disruptive technologies are relatively new terms, Society 5.0 and Industry 5.0 concepts have started to take part in the world’s agenda. While Society 5.0 started to stress the social dimension of sustainability to reach the super smart society, COVID-19 and climate change increased the need to prioritize the environment dimension. According to this progress, the European Commission put forward the “Industry 5.0” term consisting of three elements: Human-centricity, resilience, and sustainability. This chapter starts with the historical perspective of transition from Industry 4.0 to Industry 5.0. First, studies about human-centricity and sustainability in the context of Industry 4.0 as antecedents of Industry 5.0 are given. In addition to information about Society 5.0, the key drivers and enablers of Industry 5.0 are also explained before the Industry 5.0 concept. Comparisons between Industry 4.0–Industry 5.0 and Society 5.0–Industry 5.0 are complemented with challenges and opportunities. This chapter provides information about the aforementioned three elements of Industry 5.0. It also includes the enabling and emerging technologies in this context.
