Abstract
To comprehend nasal physiology, it is necessary first to appreciate the functions the nose performs. Suitably warmed and moistened air can only be delivered to the lungs via the nose. It is the principal means by which particles are removed from the air that is breathed in, and it carries out first-stage immunological defensive functions by confronting inhaled air with immunoglobulin A (IgA) attached to the mucosa lining the nose. Furthermore, inhaled air is carried high up into the nasal vault where it touches the olfactory area, allowing olfaction, a sense closely intertwined with gustatory function. A breakdown in any one of these nasal functions may produce symptoms of illness in the nose, such as nasal blockage, postnasal drip, pressure over the face, headache, or sinus discomfort [1].
