ABSTRACT
Although odontogenic pain is the most common orofacial pain, some nonodontogenic pains may mimic toothache by affecting the orofacial region and such pains can cause significant diagnostic problems for dentists. Especially when there is no significant dental pathology that can cause pain during examination, thinking that the problem may not be of dental origin is the most important step in the proper management of pain. The misdiagnoses made by dentists without detailed knowledge of nonodontogenic pain may cause unnecessary and recurrent dental treatments and ongoing pains without eliminating the problem. The purpose of this review is to help dentists to diagnose accurately and to solve the problem by updating their knowledge of nonodontogenic causes of orofacial pain.
