Özet

Nosocomial infection is one of the major causes of disease burden in children and adults and resulting with high cost due to especially resistant pathogens. Diagnosis, treatment and follow-up period of nosocomial infections varies according to patient's age, settings, underlying medical conditions and sites of infection. Laboratory evaluation of nosocomial infections for a single patient or patients during an outbreak is an essential step for diagnosis because of lack of appropriate diagnostic intervention despite of high disease burden. Conventional laboratory tests which are used for the diagnosis and follow-up for community acquired infections are not helpful for nosocomial infections. Regarding to higher cost associated with nosocomial infections, appropriate time and technique for laboratory samples and accurate evaluation of laboratory tests, results with reduced health care costs. Herein, evident based evaluation for the diagnosis of common cause of nosocomial infections such as ventilatory associated pneumoniae, intravascular catheter related infections, catheter related urinary tract infections, and nosocomial intrabdominal infections during childhood, have been summarized.
