The 19th century story of the Ottoman Empire has been accomplished under the eye-witness of Europe. The modernisation of the Empire which begins through the ends of the 18th century solely has been concentrated on the military contents. On the other hand this adventure has expanded through all categories of life in time. The Ottoman reform movement has transformed the concepts of daily life and its codes and definitions has been very open to the European epistemology. In this sense the concept of honour and its transformation is very interesting. The new imported concept of honour and its sensitive character was resulted in a new method called as duel which was an infra-judicial method of punishment. Although this European style of punishment was not highly accepted by the people living in the Empire, the duel has been rarely adopted as a method of punishment. Neverthless the judicial organisation of the Ottoman Empire has followed the attempts of duelling and tried to ban and prevent this kind of infra-judicial ways of punishment. That is to say the Ottoman Empire has been very careful about duelling which implies the presence of an illegal method of punishment.
