CD10/NEP is an intestinal mucinous marker. CD10 stains characteristically entire intestinal brush border. In this study the severity of duodenitis in iron deficiency anemia and celiac diseases were investigated. Duodenal biopsies from 17 patients with iron deficiency anemia, and 15 patients with celiac disease, and 8 patients with other disease were prospectively evaluated. CD3 and CD10 immunohistochemial staining were performed. There was no significant difference with respect to CD10 expression between celiac disease and iron deficiency anemia groups (P=0.423). There was a significant difference with respect to intraepithelial lymphocytes scores among the three groups (P=0.00067). This study suggested that partial inhibition of CD10/NEP expression is an early finding of mucosal damage. Further studies in large series is necessary to reveal the role of CD10 in the pathogenesis of these disease.
