Abstract

Nineteenth century was the period that important events had taken place for Ottoman Empire. As in all other fields, a modernization process, especially after the Tanzimat reform, was experienced in the field of education, too. Ahmet Cevdet Pasha, much known as a historian and a legal practitioner, was one of the greatest statesmen of Ottoman Empire. Apart from being a statesman, as an intellectual he also took part in the educational reforms directly or indirectly as of 1845. In this study, the importance of Ahmet Cevdet Pasha for the history of our education was reviewed and discussed.
