Higher ambidexterity in children with intellectual deficiency of idiopathic origin

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the possible relationships among handedness and footedness in patients with intellectual disability of idiopathic origin and cerebral palsy and in controls. Method: Patients with 165 schizophrenia, with 40 cerebral palsy without intellectual disability and 74 controls were included in the study. Diagnoses were made on the basis of information provided from clinical interviews and Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV. Handedness was ascertained by using the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory. Results: Patients with intellectual disability of idiopathic origin had an increased frequency of mixed-handedness and mixed-footedness and decreased frequencies of right- and left-handedness and left-footedness in comparison with controls. However, patients with cerebral palsy without intellectual disability had increased mixed- and left-handedness and increased mixed- and left-footedness compared to controls. Conclusion: The results of the present study suggest that intellectual disability of especially idiopathic origin can be accepted as a product of cerebral lateralization deficiency. However, increased left- and mixed-handedness in cerebral palsy may be accepted as an adaptation mechanism by reorganization of neural networks in brain. Therefore, it can be stated that anomalous dominance is associated with the mixed-handedness rather than left-handedness. © Universitätsverlag Ulm GmbH 2009.
