Özet

Casting defects commonly encountered in steel castings are among the primary factors that increase casting producer costs and increase delivery lead times. Such defects can be minimized through insights gained from mold filling and solidification integrity simulation. Over recent decades, commercial simulation software tools have been developed, with increasing accuracy, to help casting producers mitigate casting defects. Benefits to steel casting producers, especially, are reducing scrap castings and mitigating casting finishing costs. These simulation software tools are best deployed before tooling design and construction, but they are also effective in reducing costs associated with casting defects for castings already in production. The benefits accrue to all metalcasting alloys, but benefits may be most significant in steel casting improvements. This study is noteworthy in casting simulation because the application is a very large, 23 ton finished weight, steel casting. The casting is the center of a very large cone crushing machine used in open-pit mining. The simulations illustrated enabled improvement of solidification integrity and finishing cost reduction.
