The advances and developments in the
construction sector, long-lasting concrete conditions are required as well as
the production of high-strength concrete. One of the most important points is
the corrosion of the reinforcement in the reinforced concrete element for
several reasons. Corrosion causes a deterioration of the properties of the
materials due to a number of chemical and electrochemical reactions, resulting
in substantial damage to the reinforced concrete structure. Corrosion leads to
loss of section in steel, as a result of this the carrying capacity of the
steel is reduced. In addition, the corroded reinforcement results in a volume
increase of 2 to 6 times, which creates an internal stress in the concrete.
Therefore, the adherence of concrete-steel is decreases. Over time, the
carrying capacity is reduced, which causes the concrete to crack and break. Due
to corrosion, the structure becomes unusable over time and cannot complete its
service life.
Corrosion inhibitors can be added in fresh or
hardened concrete, infiltrate into the concrete both liquid and gaseous,
replacing the chlorine ions and surrounded the reinforcement. The use of
inhibitor may be an economic method for struggle against corrosion. Most of the traditional inhibitors developed
to solve the corrosion problem are highly toxic to human beings and has the
potential to harmful to the environment. Such inhibitors have lethal properties
when mixed into air or water and they are fatal in the 50% of animals during 24
hours of exposure time. It is also harmful to human health and can cause
temporary and permanent damage to many organs, especially liver and kidney. In
this study, importance of environmental friendly and ecological green inhibitors
is reviewed. Unlike organic and inorganic inhibitors which are widely used in
the reinforced concrete construction sector as well as they known with their
toxic effect.
