International Studies in Sociology of Education, 2025 (ESCI)
This study explores Generation Z’s multifaceted expectations of families, educational institutions, teachers, and governmental bodies in Turkey, and how these entities perceive Gen Z comparatively. Grounded in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, it examines how physiological, safety, belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization needs intersect with socioeconomic factors and educational contexts. Focusing on youth who have dropped out to work in Ulus, students in low-performing vocational high schools, and high-achievers in science high schools, the qualitative design reveals how Gen Z navigates rapid structural changes amid unequal opportunities. Findings underscore the urgent need for inclusive educational frameworks addressing diverse learning needs and broader social challenges. The study calls for adaptive institutional practices and policies to reduce inequalities and align with Gen Z’s evolving needs, offering vital insights for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders striving to promote social equity and personal growth.
