We propose an active and reactive power dispatch technique, using spot price of electricity for an interconnected power system area consisting of thermal generating units. The power dispatch technique considers upper and lower generation limits of the generation units, maximum transmission capability of transmission lines, and upper and lower limits of bus voltage magnitudes in a lossy power system. The technique consists of two main parts. The first part is the active power optimization. (P optimization), where reactive generations in the system are not changed. The second part is the reactive power optimization (Q optimization), where active generations in the system are not changed. Calculation of active and reactive flows of transmission lines, that are used in determination of optimal active (P) and reactive (Q) generations, are obtained by means of Newton-Raphson AC load dow analysis.
