Özet

This article aims to analytically examine the multilayered nature of the concept of “sound” in Mehmet Âkif Ersoy’s poetry collection Safahat. The study employs a qualitative content analysis method. Through selected poems from Safahat, the functions of sound are explored in both thematic and formal dimensions. The research reveals that sound transcends its role as merely an auditory phenomenon, encompassing functions such as the voice of individual conscience, a call for social awareness, a source of spiritual and divine inspiration, and the rhythmic echo of nature. Within the scope of thematic analysis, the study thoroughly evaluates the use of sound imagery in various contexts, including internal personal conflicts, social resistance and collective memory, spiritual submission, and natural depictions. Moreover, from a formal perspective, the article discusses how phonetic elements such as rhyme, rhythm, alliteration, and assonance enrich the emotional intensity and semantic layers of the poetry, supported by illustrative examples. In the conclusion, the study emphasizes that sound plays a decisive role both in content and form in constructing the national and spiritual atmosphere of Safahat. Mehmet Âkif’s use of sound offers a multifaceted narrative dynamic that simultaneously conveys the individual and societal dimensions of the poems to the reader. Accordingly, the article contributes significantly to interdisciplinary research on the multidimensional functions of sound in modern Turkish poetry. It also underscores the necessity for further linguistic and sociocultural analyses to comprehensively understand the literary and cultural roles of sound.
