National Patient Safety Goals and Guidelines in Turkey and Their Contribution to Healthcare Services

Patient safety has become a global priority aimed at enhancing the quality of healthcare services and minimizing medical errors. Guided by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international organizations, many countries have established national patient safety goals and developed guidelines to achieve these goals. Similarly, in Turkey, within the framework of the "National Patient Safety Goals," 23 objectives have been identified (e.g., Safe Childbirth, Radiation Safety, Information Security, Prevention of Patient Falls, Material and Device Safety, Facility Safety, Patient Safety in Diagnosis, Accurate Patient Identification, Safe Patient Transfers, Combating Healthcare-Associated Infections, Medication Safety, Blood Safety and Management, Safe Patient Handover, Neonatal Safety, Safe Airway Management in Patient Care, Cardiac Arrest Management, Combating Venous Thromboembolism, Prevention of Pressure Ulcers, Nasogastric Tube and Patient Safety, Patient and Family Engagement, Managing Delirium in Elderly Patients, Learning from Errors, and Safe Surgery), along with "Relevant Standards and Indicators" linked to these goals.

Additionally, five "National Patient Safety Guidelines" (Medication Safety Guideline, Safe Surgical Practices Guideline, Safe Childbirth Process Guideline, Prevention of Hospital-Associated Venous Thromboembolism Guideline, Neonatal Appropriate Oxygen Therapy Guideline, and Safe Airway Management in Patient Care Guideline) have been developed, taking strategic steps to improve patient safety in the healthcare system. These guidelines and goals serve as a roadmap for preventing errors that may occur during the delivery of healthcare services and enhancing the quality of patient care.

The applicability of these guidelines and goals is influenced by several factors, including the infrastructure of healthcare institutions, the awareness level of healthcare professionals, and the degree to which a culture of patient safety is embraced.

This study aims to evaluate the contribution of Turkey's National Patient Safety Goals and guidelines to the delivery of healthcare services.
