This study aims to examine the function of nationalism in the face of socio-economic inequality in the Turkish context at both theoretical and empirical levels. Nationalism is conceptualized not merely as a form of political or cultural belonging, but as a mechanism of symbolic compensation and status substitution for individuals confronted with economic insecurity, status loss, and social inequalities. Building on the inequality threshold hypothesis discussed in the literature, the study analyzes the conditions under which nationalist identification intensifies and the point beyond which this compensatory function begins to weaken. The empirical component of the study draws on data from the 2024 Turkish General Social Survey (TGSS). Using the dataset, hierarchical regression analyses are conducted, and quadratic terms are included in the models to test non-linear relationships between income and nationalist attitudes. The findings indicate that, despite widespread economic pessimism and perceived difficulties in making a living, national identity continues to function as a strong source of belonging within society. At the same time, the results suggest that once inequality surpasses a certain saturation point, this mechanism loses its effectiveness. The inverted U-shaped relationship identified between income level and nationalist attitudes empirically confirms that the capacity of nationalist discourse to mask and legitimize inequality is constrained by economic conditions. The study argues that in the absence of socio-economic justice, nationalism’s ability to manage and balance social tensions diminishes in the long run, and emphasizes that structural economic improvements are essential for the sustainability of social cohesion.
