Özet

The modernization studies that started with the foundation of the Turkish Republic deeply affected every part of the society. It has been an important initiative in terms of architectural and urban sense in order to change the traditional way of life from the Ottoman Empire to the modern life. These initiatives transform city as well as urban sense in the minds of the city's users. On the ideal of this new modern city, which can be called the project of self-embodyment of the ideology of the republic, public opinion is also a big issue besides the professional viewpoints of architects and urban planners. On those years, the only platform to declare architects opinions was the monthly journal “Arkitekt”, published by Zeki Sayar in 1931. While there was no theoretical infrastructure yet and only architectural knowledge was based on some foreign resources translated into Turkish, this journal was really important. Especially on the first ten years period, a lot of articles written by Turkish architects about the construction laws of government. At the same time humor magazines in Turkey were more popular than this journal. Humor magazines are, by nature, public, dissenting, independent and impartial media. They make their production for the society again by being fed from the society. In this great transformation of the city, it was also important in this sense that the humor magazines which produced a large number of content in that period handled the matter. The cartoon artists expressed their opinions about this urban development by writing and mostly by drawing. This work will try to examine and compare the productions about new city and construction laws of these two different media, between the period of 1930 and 1940.
