Abstract:

Pomegranate has been traditionally cultivated since ancient times under diverse agro-climatic conditions of the world and is one of the most important commodity consumed in various countries due to the high content of healthy ingredients, nutritional and medicinal value of the fruit. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of different ecologies on physico-chemical properties and bioactive compounds of six pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) varieties grown under Erdemli-Mersin and Saricakaya-Eskisehir conditions in Turkey. This study was carried out during the harvest season of 2020 with matured fruits of six pomegranate varieties ('Wonderful', 'Hicaznar', 'Turkmen', 'Bulbul', '33N12' and '33N52') from Erdemli and Saricakaya, Turkey. For the successful accomplishment of the study physical and chemical quality determination and bioactive compounds data were collected. Fruit weight, length, diameter, total weight of arils, aril yield, and juice yield of analyzed varieties ranged from 296.88 - 526.63 g, 89.52 - 74.52 mm, 86.26 - 102.93 mm, 148.29 g to 292.24 g, 48.03 to 58.05%, 40.59% to 50.64%, respectively. Additionally, in the present study contents of total anthocyanin varied from 85.92 - 377.42 mg Cyn-3-glu/kg, total phenolic ranged from 615.48 - 1202.20 mg GAE/kg, total flavonoid from 81.21 - 179.12 mg Catechin/kg, antioxidant activity ranged from from 9.49 - 16.69 mM Trolox/mL and vitamin C content varied from 19.98 to 39.42 mg/100g. However, among all the investigated varieties, Hicaznar and Wonderful contained the highest content of TSS, total anthocyanin, total flavonoid, total antioxidant activity, and vitamin C. Finally, it was concluded that pomegranate fruits grown in the Saricakaya microclimate had a higher content of health ingredients (antioxidant activity, phenolic content, anthocyanin content, flavonoid content, and vitamin C content) and more fruit attractiveness (aril and peel redness, and color intensity) than those grown in Erdemli region.
