Abstract:
As a socio-economical term, energy plays a vital role in economic growth. While household energy consumption is one of the major issues in terms of social development, commercial energy consumption is another vital issue in terms of economic growth. Although there are many studies having attempted to test for causal relationship between energy and economic growth, there is no consensus about this issue.This study investigate the causal relationship between final energy consumption and economic growth for Turkey and European Union Countries by using panel data analysis. There are five sections in this study. In the first part of the study, from past studies that examining the relationship between energy consumption and economic growth are summarized. In the second part, energy, energy sources and petrolum energy are specialized. In the third part the concepts of economic growth and development are specialized. The relationship between energy and economic growth are explained by factors that affect energy consumption. In the fourth part, features, advantages, disadvanges of panel data structures are mentioned, descriptive statistics and graphics which are used in the panel data analysis described and introduced which purpose they used for. Then, the theoretical framework for diagnostic analysis and estimation methods are given. In the fifth part , The GDP impact of petrol consumption was investigated by the analyses of panel data by using annual data from 1990-2010 period of 21 EU Member States and Turkey.As a conclusion it is reached that there is a significant correlation between energy consumption and economic growth for these countries.
